Ratan Tata, whose real identity is Ratan Naval Tata, was born in Bombay, British India (now Mumbai), on December 28, 1937. Naval Tata and Sooni Commissariat are his parents. He graduated from Harvard Business School and Cornell University. He studied at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, wherein he received a B.S. (1962) in architectural style before returning to his job in India.
