Ratan Tata Biography

Ratan Tata, whose real identity is Ratan Naval Tata, was born in Bombay, British India (now Mumbai), on December 28, 1937. Naval Tata and Sooni Commissariat are his parents. They separated when Ratan Tata was ten years old. Ratan Tata was raised with his half-brother Noel Tata (son of Naval Tata and Simone Tata).

He is an Indian businessman who presided over the Tata Group twice, from 2016 to 2017 and from 1991 to 2012.

Rata Tata’s Education

He graduated from Harvard Business School and Cornell University. He studied at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, wherein he received a B.S. (1962) in architectural style before returning to his job in India. 

Work as Chairperson of Tata Sons

He is a prominent member of a family of Indian entrepreneurs and philanthropists. He gained expertise working for many Tata Group organisations before getting selected as director in charge of the National Radio and Electronics Co. in 1971. After 10 years, he gained the position of chairman of Tata Industries. He then replaced his uncle J.R.D. Tata was chairman of the Tata Group in 1991.

Revenues increased more than 40 times, and profit increased more than 50 times, throughout his 21-year management. He persuaded Tata Tea to purchase Tetley, Tata Motors to purchase Jaguar Land Rover, and Tata Steel to purchase Corus, changing and developing the organisation from a generally Indian-focused conglomerate into a multinational corporation.

He also developed the Tata Nano automobile. The car’s costing was limited and that was reasonable for an Indian buyer.

On December 28, 2012, Ratan Tata, who turned 75, resigned from his position as chairman of Tata Sons. After Cyrus Mistry was chosen as his replacement, the Board of Directors and Legal department decided to have him fired on October 24, 2016, at which point Ratan Tata was appointed the group’s temporary chairman.

Ratan Tata financed the University of New South Wales Faculty of Engineering to offer better water for underserved communities since he is an advocate for education, healthcare, and rural development.

In 2010, the Harvard Business School (HBS) received a $50 million donation for the creation of an executive centre from the Tata Group firms and Tata charities.

For a facility to study cognitive systems and autonomous cars, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) gave Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) a $35 million donation. The 48,000 square foot structure is known as TCS Hall, and it is the greatest gift made by a firm in history.

The Tata Group donated Rs. 950 million and the Tata Centre for Technology and Design to the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay in 2014. (TCTD). A grant of that scale has never previously been awarded to the institute.

Tata Trusts also provided a grant of 750 million rupees to the Centre for Neuroscience at the Indian Institute of Science to study the origins of Alzheimer’s disease and create methods for its early identification and cure.
